Limbaga 77, Savor the Taste and Feel Of Filipino Home-cooking

That feeling of coming home, being welcomed by the hearty aroma of a lovingly prepared meal to be shared and savored with loved ones – that’s what Limbaga 77 hopes to evoke as diners step into this newly opened restaurant located in Scout Limbaga, Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
Converted from a rustic house, Limbaga 77 retains its homey feel as it intends to be a place where family and friends can enjoy the best of Filipino home-cooking.

After all, the place was converted from a 50 year old house and its original architecture was retained including the wooden floor panels and the large window frames, to preserve its cozy, homey feel.  The old house’s receiving areas were converted into dining halls, bedchambers into function rooms and the patio and veranda into al fresco dining areas –  all comfortably furnished and decked with minimalist ornaments. Limbaga 77’s owners, led by entrepreneur, Rex Tiri, said “it was really intended to be a venue for family and friends – like a second home where they can enjoy comfort food.”
The Limbaga 77 menu is decidedly Filipino, comprised of classic recipes reminiscent of the country’s diverse home cooking.  While diners are made to feel right at home, their palates are treated to an appetizing journey by offering them dishes that have graced the tables of households in different regions of the Philippines.
For example, there’s the all-time favorite Crispy Pata – boiled, baked, and deep fried pork leg in coconut juice and beef stock with roasted garlic soy sauce and bay leaf – which will go well with Poqui Poqui Rolls, an Ilocano inspired grilled eggplant omelet stuffed in lumpia wrapper and served with a homemade sweet chili sauce.  Diners can also order Stuffed Laing, the restaurant’s version of the popular Bicol delicacy that combines fresh taro leaves, ground pork, white shrimp, simmered in chicken stock, coco milk with lemon grass, white onion and garlic or Binusog na Pusit – succulent squid marinated in organic honey and calamansi, stuffed with tomatoes, onion, cheese, chili leaves pesto, sprinkled with soy sauce.

Of course, any Filipino meal is not complete without rice.  While most like rice just plain and simple, diners are encouraged to try the Danggit Fried Rice featuring the South’s well-loved dried fish mixed with scallions, sliced scrambled eggs, onions and garlic; or the Bagoong Rice, made savory by accentuating rice with tangy fish paste, bits of sweet mango, tomatoes, white onions and garlic.

Limbaga 77’s original creations are likewise a must-try as they present ingredients and ways of cooking that are quite out of the ordinary.  Ever heard of Stuffed Bulaklak ng Kalabasa? This dish serves squash blossoms packed with a delicious meld of ground pork, local white cheese, cheddar cheese, spring and white onions and garlic.  How about Dahon ng Sili Pesto Pasta? This is the Filipino version of aglio e olio linguini pasta using local chili leaves pesto, topped with cashew nuts.   Most people know adobo to be a chicken and/or pork fare but Limbaga 77’s version is Spicy Seafood Adobo, which brings together crabs, white shrimps, mussels and squid cooked in coconut milk, soy sauce, and vinegar.

The delight does not end after the main meal because the desserts and coffee also offer a unique experience. Highly recommended are the Brazo Tablea Cake, a Filipino-Spanish fusion dessert highlighted by hints of cocoa tablea and Batangas barako coffee; and Bikoron, which presents sticky rice cooked in coconut milk in turon-style – rolled in lumpia wrapper with a dash of peanut sauce.  Coffee lovers on the other hand will surely be interested in Limbaga 77’s luscious concoction of organic coffee beans from Benguet, Mt. Province and Bukidnon, sweetened by a popular sacharrine treat from Ilocos called Balikutsa.

With its delicious food, cordial atmosphere, Limbaga 77 is actually a place that diners who love Filipino cooking can call home.   For inquiries and reservation, call 09267158134 or email limbaga77cafe@gmail.com
FOOD MAGAZINE SHOWCASES EASY PIZZA AND PASTA RECIPES IN FIRST FREE COOKING CLASS

Hundreds of foodie and kitchen savvy people learned new easy and simple pizza and pasta recipes from experts during the first leg of free cooking classes offered by Food magazine for its 20thanniversary titled, “Food Tastings: A Pizza and Pasta Class.”

“Who doesn’t love pizza and pasta, right?”  Ms. Nana Ozaeta, Food magazine’s editor-in-chief said at the event which received a loud and enthusiastic “yes” from the participants who were all ready to learn and make their own pizza and pasta recipes.

Food magazine is the largest culinary selling magazine title of ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc.

The official venue partner, Project Pie Tomas Morato, was full to the brim for “Food Tastings” that featured premiere chef Nancy Dizon-Edralin and Lifestyle Network’s Portia Baluyut, who both showcased their cooking skills to a room filled with eager participants.

Portia Baluyut, who made a mark in the industry as one of the finalists in Lifestyle Network’s “Clash of the Toque-en Ones” in 2010, passionately shared her secret in making a chicken and chorizo summer cream tomato pasta. Baluyut is also a restaurateur and host of Lifestyle Network’s “A Pinch of Portia.”

Meanwhile, chef Nancy Dizon-Edralin gamely introduced three easy-to-make scrumptious pastas: a conchiglie with sun dried tomato and goat cheese, pasta portobello, and seafood pasta with squid ink sauce. Chef Nancy also made her session engaging by inviting people to help her make the dishes on stage.

“Food Tastings” got even more interactive as Project Pie taught the participants how to make two creative pizzas from their resident chefs and gave participants a chance to build and name their very own pizza creations.

“Food Tastings: A Pizza and Pasta Class” also turned out to be exciting and fun as participants took snapshots of their social media worthy pastas and pizzas and shared their photos online.

The next series of classes of “Food Tastings” will run throughout the year, having participants explore recipes on health and wellness, hearty breakfast meals, and delectable sugar rush gift ideas.

KUYA J RESTAURANT: By Far The best Crispy Pata in Metro Manila

As a Kuya (older brother), I often accompany my younger sister to different food trips in the Metro. We love scouting for new places and restaurants. In one of our bonding time together, we stumbled upon Kuya J Restaurant just across BDO inside SM Pasig.

It is proven time and again that eating out with your family members ensures closer ties with your family. So you better start doing it.

One particular dish that caught our fancy is Kuya J's sizzling seafood.  We cleaned it up to the last drop of its sauce!

Kuya J's Sizzling Porkchop was cooked ala Bistek Tagalog. Hmmm...Malasa, malaman at masarsa! (tasty, meaty and saucy!)

We super love Kuya J's version of Tokwa't Baboy sa Suka (tofu and pork in vinegar)! Super yummy and super sulit (worth it)! Imagine the three of us shared this and it only costs us Php190. Imagine, a delicious meal minus the exorbitant price tag.

Kuya J's rack of ribs is sarap (delicious) to the bones! Look at its serving. It is good for up to 6 people for only Php395. No, I am not kidding. So go ahead and try it yourself.

We also love the Chili dinamita (dynamite).

Its version of Bihon Guisado (sauteed Chinese rice noodles) is so worth it because Kuya J did not scrimp on its ingredients.

For us, a meal is not complete without soup. So we ordered Sinigang na Baboy (pork stew).  Very delicious!
It has a good presentation of its rice offerings. My favorite is its danggit (small thin salted dried fish known as rabbitfish or spinefoot) rice. It reminds me of Cebu where said fish is very popular.

Also a good catch is its unli-rice! Great value for money.

Pinoy food at Kuya J is not only good, it is also very affordable. Must try are their sisig and baked scallops.

The tablea flan was good. My companions enjoyed it more. We will be back for their other offerings. Service was excellent!

The crispy pata was the favorite that it was instantaneously reduced to bits and pieces after it was served.

I observed that Kuya J's staff are like a caring kuyas that takes care of you and your family when you dine in at their restaurant. They're very polite, fast and they always refill our glasses with water. Think about 5 star service. They operate methodically and you can see that they are trained very well.

Kuya J restaurant has a wide variety of food choices. I was amazed how economical it is to dine in at Kuya J, they certainly provide great value for money. Each serving is good for 2 to 4 people.

Delicous fried Halo halo with ice cream capped our meal.

Food-tasting Event Showcases Mabuhay Germany 2015 Concessionaires

Food establishments offering the best of German cuisine and beverages recently headlined a food-tasting event as part of the upcoming Mabuhay Germany 2015.

Hosted by the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI), the activity featured participating food concessionaires who showed a preview of what will be served on February 21 and 22 at the Bonifacio Global City.

“We know that Filipinos love to eat, and this certain passion for food is a trait shared by Germans as well. In Mabuhay Germany 2015, we are introducing German cuisine to more Filipinos, allowing them to experience the country’s culture one bite at a time. Since there will be no entrance fee, everyone can come freely and have a slice of German food and culture for the whole weekend,” said GPCCI General Manager Nadine Fund.

Among the Mabuhay Germany 2015 food concessionaires is The German Club Manila, founded as early as 1886 under the name Casino Union. Located at Eurovilla II Building in Legaspi Village, Makati City, it offers the perfect venue for fine dining, special events and get-togethers for members and their guests. For Mabuhay Germany 2015, The German Club will serve breaded pork steak, an assortment of German sausages, Goulash soup, assorted salads, pastas, Sauerkraut, spaetzle and Weihenstephan Premium Beer.

Guests should also not miss out on BAMM (Big Appetites, Mighty Munch), Manila’s first German-Turkish comfort food establishment. Tucked away in an unobtrusive corner of A.venue Mall along Makati Avenue, the award-winning restaurant offers specials that include Schnitzel, authentic pork escalope with zesty crumbs and a golden crunch, served with Sauerkraut and a choice of either Fishsticks or Hummus. For Mabuhay Germany 2015, BAMM partnered Beer Hero to serve premium draft beer hand-crafted in the Philippines.

Another concessionaire to be featured in Mabuhay Germany 2015 is Fraulein’s Sausages, a frequent food attraction at bazaars and other community events in Metro Manila. Popular for its sumptuous sausage sandwiches, it has won the hearts particularly of the young crowd. To keep its menu authentic, the owner goes the extra mile by importing condiments from Germany.

Meanwhile, Brotzeit will serve a feast of its signature dishes including pork knuckle, schnitzel (pork or chicken), sausages (chicken, Nurnberger, Kasekrainer, Weisswurst, garlic sausage), honey Bavarian pork ribs with salad, potato wedges and mashed potatoes. In German, “brot” means “bread” and “zeit” literally translates to “time,” so its name means bread time or small meal or snack time, which is usually accompanied by refreshing, good quality beers.

Now on its seventh year, Mabuhay Germany is organized by GPCCI in cooperation with the German Embassy, Goethe Institut and the German European School Manila to celebrate over 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

For more information about Mabuhay Germany 2015, visit GPCCI’s website, http://www.gpcci.org or its Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/GPCCI.org.
