Uni-Pak Mackerel Laing Recipe Plus Giveaway

Uni-Pak Mackerel, Yummytales, Travelonshoestring

“Laing” or "Natong" in Bicol dialect is a spicy delicious dish. I grow up loving this yummy dish with all my heart!

Its main ingredients are the following:

  • Dried taro leaves
  • Coconut milk (or gata)
  • and Siling Labuyo
This yummy dish originated from my province- the Bicol region ( Region 5 of Luzon Island). Laing has a really yummy taste and budget friendly cost. For the information of everybody this dish is well known not only in Bicol region but also all throughout the Philippines.

Believe it or not, different Laing versions sprung all over the Philippines. While some added more ingredients, others used alternative ingredients. With several variations around, what I am about to show you is not the original Bicol recipe.  For this laing version I used Uni-Pak Mackerel as additional ingredients. Because mackerel is rich in Omega 3.  I hope you will like it too!
Uni-Pak canned goods are imported from Japan and Korea and distributed locally by S-Lord Development Corporation. Food products must meet a certain level of standards to be accepted in the export market. It means that the brand has met that standard, including the Uni-Pak Mackerel in Natural Oil variant.
Try this delicious Laing Recipe and let me know what you think.
  • 30 pcs. dried taro leaves ( use a white clean cloth to remove dirt & dust)
  • ½ lb. pork, cut into thin strips

  • 6 pcs small chili
  • ¼ cup ginger, cut into small strips

  1. In a large pan, pour-in the Coconut milk and bring to a boil then set aside.
  2. In a pan add the garlic, onion, and ginger. Simmer for 3 to 5 minutes
  3. Add the pork meat and Uni-Pak Mackerel and stir continuously
  4. Put in the small chili and simmer for another 10 minutes
  5. Add the fish sauce and dried Taro leaves (Strip into small pieces) and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes
  6. Simmer until the Taro leaves softens.

Calling all my fellow foodies!  Mark your calendars for the 11th edition of IFEX Philippines on May 19-21, 2017 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM) and Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC).

I am so excited to attend this year's IFEX Philippines! Why? It is because IFEX Philippines, Asia’s ethnic food & ingredients show, is the country’s biggest international trade exhibition in the Philippines and Asia.  I believe wholesale buyers, importers and food distributors from all over the world will be present at IFEX 2017.

IFEX Philippines is organized by the Department of Trade and Industry, through its Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (DTI-CITEM), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, through its Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (DA-AMAS), and the ASEAN Committee on Business and Investment Promotion (CBIP), which is chaired by DTI.

To satisfy your curiosity, let me show you a sneak peak of this year's IFEX media preview! Mind you, this is the event to go to if you want those hard to contact suppliers you're wishing to meet.

I arrived at the event just a little past four. My sissy Blair and I were one of the early birds. Some of the participants has not finish setting up their booth yet.

I was really excited because this is my first time to attend a media preview of the IFEX Philippines event. I had an amazing experience at the preview and I have a high expectation of the actual event! I already cleared out my schedule so I can focus to this event! I am really excited with the food selections, booze and ingredients that will be featured at this year's IFEX!

For this year, the event organizers were expecting more than seven hundred (700) exhibitors/food firms, composed by various food and ethnic ingredient manufacturers, exporters, consolidators, artisans, chefs, culinary historians, experts and gourmet enthusiasts across the globe, each one will be bringing a distinctive products offerings, knowledge, and skills at the much-awaited feast!

Topping the list is Lemon Square!

The "Pang bansang Baon ng Pilipinas"! I bet, your baby has a lemon square or two as baon whenever your kid/s go to school.

I was really amazed with the wide variety of food selection for this year's IFEX!

Happening this week beginning on the 19th of May until the 22nd, buyers and visitors will experience and understand deeper the Philippine food with its many-sided origins in history, geography and culture.

This is definitely an event that you should not miss!

Wilcon Depot, the Philippines number one home improvement and construction supply retailer, recently held the Bull Outdoor Summer BBQ Feast in Tagaytay Highlands, Cavite, last April 1, 2017.

Ms. Rosemarie Ong welcomed the guests together with Wilcon Chief Product Officer Careen Belo, and representatives from Bull who flew all the way from the USA: Mark Nureddine, Bull Outdoor Products Founder and CEO; Frank Mello, Bull Outdoor Products VP of Sales and Marketing; Barbara Nureddine; Jacob Nureddine; and Victor Wong.

Nana Ozaeta, Chef Jessie Sincioco, Rosemarie Ong, Wilcon SEVP-COO; Barbara Nureddine, and Mark Nureddine, Bull Outdoor Products Founder and CEO
“Our partnership with Bull has been productive throughout. I believe that they can make a difference in the way grilled food is being served in the country,” said Ms. Rosemarie Ong, Wilcon Depot Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

The free grilling event was graced by one of the most popular chef in the country today, chef Chef Jessie Sincioco.

Chef Jessie demonstrated to everyone how easy it is for everyone to use the Bull Outdoor Barbecue Grill product. Yes, siree! To the delight of everyone, right in front of the very eyes of the curious guests, the good chef whips up a sumptuous feast using the Bull Outdoor Grill products from the USA.

I am a great fun of outdoor cooking because I love barbecue parties. Whether you admit it or not, barbecue's are part of almost every party of the Filipino! I used to be invited to my aunt's abode in New Manila inside rolling hills subdivision and they have a barbecue grill just like this. It was usually the maids and assistants of my aunt who do the grilling. But during the live demo of Chef Jessie I learned how easy it was to cook using only the Bull Grill. You see, Chef Jessie brought all the meat and seafood in Tagaytay Highlands raw, and with just the Bull grill she was able to cook all of it on-the-spot. The BULL GRILL is a highly efficient tool. What I witnessed makes me jump with joy! I would want my very own bull grill in my own backyard real soon!

With all the yummy dishes prepared by the good chef. I disregarded my diet and went ahead and tried a little of everything of the yummy dishes. I did not have any qualms because I know for a fact that everything was fresh and was cook in front of my very eyes!

All the guests had a good time eating all that glorious food prepared by the good chef.

The Bull Summer feast is a success!

Bull Outdoor Products is a Wilcon Depot exclusive brand. Proudly made in the USA, Bull has been creating top of the line products for over 20 years now. Ben Foster & Laura Prepon Are Expecting Their First Child!

Did you know that one of Laura Prepon's favorite foods is raw almond butter.  She loves it to bits. I think that is good especially now that she's expecting her child with Ben Foster.  Nuts are a good source of protein and folate needed for a healthy pregnancy. During pregnancy, nuts nutritional benefits includes high protein and a healthy fat content. Most nuts contain between 160 and 200 calories per 1-ounce serving. Just don't over indulged.

Dried fruit and nuts                    Name of Nutrient
Walnuts (akhrot)Omega 3 fats
Cashew nuts (kaju) Peanuts (moongphali)Phosphorus
Dates (khajur) Dried apricot (khubaani) Dried apples (seb) Dried bananas (kela) Raisins (kishmish)Potassium
Almonds (badaam) Peanuts (moongphali) Pistachio nuts (pista)Protein

A pregnancy announcement is most often good news that we’re all excited to share. Especially when it’s coming from our favorite celebs. Adding to the list of pregnant celebs this year is Laura Prepon & Ben Foster. Yay!  We are so happy for this lovely couple!

Back in October, we were all surprised to see Laura Prepon, 31 and her soon-to-be-husband, Ben Foster, 36, attending the El Lay premiere of The Girl on the Train as an ENGAGED couple! Three months after, sources say that the Orange is the New Black star and the Hell or High Water actor are now expecting their first bun in the oven.

This celebrity pair are known to keep their personal life quiet as much as possible that even their close friends didn’t know about their engagement until they officially announced it in the media. Although some of us may want to know the details of their lives, we have to understand that even though they’re public figures, they have the right to choose what information they want to share with the public eye.

During the Spotlight Awards for the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, according to an on-looker:

"Ben seemed really protective and kept very close to Laura the entire night. He was holding on to her arm as they walked in and kept by her side during the dinner… Neither of them got up much to mingle. They definitely enjoyed dinner. I noticed she finished her plate."

You can’t take that feeling of being protected away from Ben Foster, can you? I mean, he’s a first time dad, and the love of his life is carrying another human being which he will surely love too.

Congratulations on the wonderful news! We are all excited to know the baby’s gender!

Note: There are pros and cons of peanut ingestion in pregnancy. If you have a strong family history of allergies, talk to your doctor about whether he feels you should avoid peanuts in pregnancy.
